Breeders have bred large numbers of breeds in individual animal species, and their creation, in addition to cultural maturity, also showed the isolation or openness of different territories. The great diversity of breeds is also due to the variety of performance requirements, which have changed over the centuries, but also to the variety of hobbies of breeders.

The university textbook e-Atlas of animal breeds: cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs is an extended online publication that follows the teaching texts of the study subjects Animal husbandry and technology of animal husbandry for students of second year of study at the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice. The textbook includes 28 breeds of cattle, 31 breeds of sheep, 17 breeds of goats and 18 breeds of pigs.
